Edmond Aman-Jean

Edmond Aman-Jean – Wikimedia Commons

I had blogged an art link about the French Symbolist painter Edmond Aman-Jean earlier in February, but since that time Wikimedia has added several images that I had not seen before.  Here are my favorites.

UCB – Vintage Sheet Music Archive

UCB Music Library – Digital Sheet Music Collection

This is a great collection sheet music scans from 1890 to 1920.  In addition to the huge ragtime section, there are Western, Colorado and Ingram collections.  My only wish is that this site included links so that you could hear recorded versions of these songs and music where possible.  The ones I found on YouTube, I blogged below in the video item.  Here are some of my favorite images from the collection.

Just in case you are interested in who Gaby Deslys is, she was a beautiful dancer, whose life was cut tragically short in 1919.

Chet Atkins – Dill Pickles Rag

I found a boatload of ragtime sheet music at the University of Colorado, which I will be logging later.  Here are two rags that I found on YouTube, which I think complement the Thanksgiving holidays.  This recording by Chet Atkins is wonderful.

There’s no one as Irish as Barack Obama

The limerick band Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys sing about our Irish president elect Barack O’bama on Irish TV.  Here are the lyrics in case you want to sing-along at home. And yes, the world has gone nuts over Obama

The Mask of Lincoln

One Life: The Mask of Lincoln

To celebrate Lincoln’s 200th birthday in 2009, there is a  Lincoln photographic exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C.  I’ve always been a big fan of A. Lincoln, and it’s no surprise that president elect Barack Obama is too.  Like a lot of people, I became very interested in the Civil and especially Lincoln after I saw Ken Burns’ marvelous PBS series.   I’ve read David Herbert Donald’s Lincoln biography and also bought David Grubin’s PBS special on Lincoln.  In my opinion, Lincoln was the greatest president, a great orator and perhaps the greatest political leader of all time.   The University of Michigan also has the searchable Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln online.

Mathew Brady – Albumen silver print (1864)

Here’s one of my favorite quotes by Lincoln from his first inaugural speech in 1861:

I am loth to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, streching from every battle-field, and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

McCain and Palin’s Crazy Indian Dancefest

This is pretty ridiculous and cheesy parody, but very funny nonetheless.  This clip was a video response to the hilarious Crazy Indian Video… Buffalaxed!, which is a sounds like English translation (not real) of a Bollywood Hindi musical number.
