Glenn Arthur - Scarlett O'Hara (2013) FB
On Saturday, I went to the opening show of the Fiction Annual Portrait Invitation at the Modern Eden Gallery.  I thought this painting by Glenn Arthur was the best of the show.  The image does not do justice to the quality of this work.  Of course, it was already sold by the time I got there.  I also like Soey Milk's entry "Night Flow".

How Good Is Murakami?
I'm currently reading this book, and it's the best thing I've read in years.  Here's what novelist Jonathan Franzen said: “While you’re reading it, everything in the world feels different. And that for me is the mark of a great novel … I think it’s one of the great novels that’s appeared anywhere in the world in the last 30 to 40 years."

Yumiko Kayukawa - Madness (2013)
I had the pleasure to see Sweet Yumiko's "Madness" show opening on Saturday at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco, which is just a short walk from the Civic Center Bart station.  On the Bart, I was totally enthralled reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami.  As I walked up Hyde St. to Geary, it was like being in a chapter from the book.  BTW, I walked back on Larkin.  I think Larkin is a little less shaky.

When I got to the Shooting Gallery, it was a real feast for the eyes to see Yumiko's paintings hanging in the main gallery.   I had been blogging her artwork since 2006, but had never seen her work in vivo. Her paint precision brush strokes are very crisp and flat looking almost as if they were printed on the canvas.  I'm not sure how she manages that, but the effect is very stunning.  Her subject matter usually involves a beautiful female figure surrounded by various animals, e.g., cranes, elephants, tigers that are engaged in a whimsical Japanese flavored activity.  I also got to meet Yumiko briefly and her companion.  She was very attractive, friendly, and was interested in which works of art I liked best.  Here are a few of my favorites from the show, but it was hard to choose.  The show runs until June 29th.  Check it out if you are in the area. I'm glad I went.  It was fun.
