Van Gogh, Gauguin, Czanne, and Beyond
On Thursday (9/30/2010), I went to the exhibit at the de Young Museum in San Francisco which featured Post-Impressionist Masterpieces from the Muse dOrsay.  I was completely blown away with all the great art I had never seen close up before.  The exhibit lighting was exceptional too because it made the vivid colors seem to glow.  If you happen to be in the SF Bay area, I would strongly recommend checking this exhibit out.

Here's just a sample of the paintings that knocked my sox off:

Vincent van Gogh - Starry Night over the Rhone (1888)

The painting below is huge (at least 6 feet high).  The colors are much more vivid than in the image below, but it is the closest to the painting that I could muster on Google.  I had never seen or heard of the painting before, but the beauty of Madame Roger Jourdain is just stunning.  She was the muse of other artists of the period as well.

Albert Besnard - Madame Roger Jourdain (1886)

Paul Gauguin - Arearea (Joyousness) (1892)

Henri Rousseau - The Snake Charmer (1907)  This is a huge painting too.

I plan on going back before the exhibit is over.  Also, I've got to go Paris and visit the Muse dOrsay before I kick the bucket.

Asian Art Museum | Shanghai Exhibit
I finally made it to this wonderful exhibition of artwork from Shanghai.  I've always enjoyed those Shanghai girl posters from the 20s and 30s, and they had the gems below in the exhibit.  Also, I had never seen a qipao or Cheongsam dress before, and the ones the had on display were beautiful works of art.  I also loved the painting by Tao Lengyue - Plum Blossoms Under the Moon, but I couldn't find a really good image of the work on the Internet.  Here is a small B&W image of Flickr.  The exhibit closed on Sunday 9/5/2010.
