Scientists Create First Levitating Popcorn Maker

CAMBRIDGE, MA (IWR News Parody) - MIT and Columbia University scientists have finished a novel experiment that confines high-temperature ionized butter, called plasma, using the strong magnetic fields from a half-ton superconducting ring inside a huge vessel reminiscent of a spaceship. The experiment, the first of its kind, has resulted in the first levitating hot buttery popcorn maker in the world.

First results from the Levitated Popcorn Experiment (LPX) were presented at a meeting of the American Physical Society the week of Nov. 15. Scientists and students described more than 100,000 popcorn discharges created by the new device, in 5 to 10 seconds. X-ray spectroscopy and visible photography recorded spectacular images of the hot, buttery popcorn and its dynamics confined by strong magnetic force fields.

Miklos Porkolab, director of MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center, pictured above proudly standing up to his waist in popcorn next to his LPX device, said unlike other carbon based popcorn poppers, his machine would not contribute to global warming.

The work is sponsored by ConAgra Foods maker of Orville Redenbacher Gourmet Popcorn.
